Chuseok: Korean Holiday

Songpyeon: Half Moon Rice Cake

Chuseok, also called Hangawi, is one of the most important traditional holidays in Korea.  Although this holiday only occurs on September 15th, the day before and the day after are also considered holdiays, which makes Chuseok a 3-day event.

South Korean Flag

Chuseok is a celebration of harvest and family.  Seen as 'Korean Thanksgiving' families gather and enjoy the days off.  Chuseok brings families together to perform ancestral rites, visit the graves of their ancestors, make hand-made songpyeon and eat a delicious feast of traditional Korean food.  On Chuseok Day (19th), generally everything is closed, including department stores, entertainment, restaurants, and other such venues.  Lucky enough, there are some places open for tourists to experience the culture of Chuseok including Namsan Hanok Village and traditional Korean places such as the ancient palaces located in Seoul.

Traditional Chuseok Events

Chuseok day is one of the few days of the year when Seoul is uncharacteristically quiet. For more information, click here!
